Launching a TV Network in 2026: It’s Easier and Cheaper Than Ever. But Should You?

The barrier to launching a television network has never been lower. Off the shelf products from dozens of companies let you set up and launch a 24/7 TV network in a matter of hours. A simple linear channel running a looped schedule of pre-recorded programming can cost as little as a few hundred dollars per month to operate.

It’s easier and cheaper than ever to launch a TV channel. But should you?

The low barrier of entry to creating a TV network has fueled the explosion of FAST channels. But how many are actually making money? The industry is quite tight-lipped about financials, but it's not a stretch to say that FAST is not a magic money tree.

It’s tempting from the prospective broadcaster's view to focus on the technical ease of launching a channel nowadays. Playout is simple, cheap and reliable. However, no slick technology compensates for weak programming. People need a reason to watch.

Over the past few years I’ve seen a lot of proposals and launches of new TV networks. Some I would watch myself. Others perhaps aren’t for me, but I could see the market. But some... I struggled to see how they would ever find an audience.

Finding your audience

Why would a viewer watch your linear TV network? That’s the question I think some new broadcasters don’t want to ask.

Maybe you’ve built an audience elsewhere, as a syndicated content library, or perhaps you’re a creator on YouTube. You need to understand who your viewer is. If you’ve got an online fanbase already, that doesn’t necessarily translate to a linear audience, because your fanbase already knows where to find you. They’re probably not going to move with you. Or if you have a stready viewership for 30 minutes each week, does that mean your viewers will watch a 24/7 stream of your content?

Distribution

It’s all well and good having a TV network with compelling content, but a TV network without distribution is like a bicycle without wheels. Even the large players struggle with discoverability.

This is where many new networks stumble. Many playout providers offer an all-in-one solution, with an app and streaming website. That’s great, except it still misses the most pivotal aspect of running a TV network: the audience. Your audience needs to find you. I've had countless clients and contacts tell me in the past: "We don't need distribution, we have an app." How are people supposed to find your app? Distribution always needs a holistic approach, even in 2026 when launching a TV network seems like a simple task.

The Path Forward

The ease in launching a TV network is something to be celebrated. But it’s absolutely key to launch with a full plan. It’s not enough to create a network if nobody can watch it.

Securing carriage on cable, IPTV, fiber, FAST platforms, OTT apps, or smart TV ecosystems requires navigating technical, commercial, and regulatory requirements.

The good news? With the right partner and strategy, even smaller or niche broadcasters can gain distribution across multiple platforms and territories.

If you’re considering launching a network or expanding an existing one, the most important first step is getting expert guidance early.
